Strengths Based

As a strengths-based practitioner I’m sometimes asked what this means. A good definition is: Strengths-Based – observing and acting upon what is working well.

All organizations and its members have strengths. When these strengths, and the beneficial outcomes of these strengths are observed and validated it improves quality of life, employment skills and overall health.

The Best Tax Plan Ever

 Scott Smith's Tax Plan
                – The best tax plan ever.
By Joe Tassinari

Scott Smith for PresidentPresently, in the United States there is approximately $15 Trillion in taxable income – the pool of money the Feds tax to operate. The Federal Government spends approximately $4 Trillion per year from taxable receipts. Smith’s plan is to acquire the $4 Trillion via a Payment Tax. His plan eliminates income tax, payroll taxes including social security and Medicaid taxes, inheritance tax and excise taxes on phone bills, utilities, fuel and airline tickets.

"Because the pool of money being taxed will increase from $15 Trillion to $3,615 Trillion, Americans would pay only one-eighth of one percent with Smith's payment tax."

The 2014 World Series is in the books – the San Francisco Giants rode the arm of pitching ace Madison Bumgarner to defeat the Kansas City Royals with the score of 3-2 in a thrilling game 7 finale.

This series was filled with many accomplishments. World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner pitched 21 innings giving up only 1 run for a 0.43 ERA while the rest of the Giants starting pitchers threw only 16.1 innings combined.  Hunter Pence hit for a .444 average the third highest in World Series history. The Giants won a game 7 on the road a first since the 1979 “We Are Family” Pittsburg Pirates defeated the Baltimore Orioles. This series marked the 1st time a #5 seed (Giants) won the championship.bryan stow

With all the accolades and records set, one of the greatest achievements of this contest was how the Kansas City fans treated the San Francisco fans who traveled to Kauffman Stadium to watch the series.

Calculus and True Grit

by Joe Tassinari

This is a story to publicly congratulate my son Dominic on completing his 3rd and final college calculus course, CALC 3 at Folsom Lake College, and to give encouragement through example to future calculus students.

The reason this is noteworthy is because Dominic's perseverance and learning capacity had to grow with each level of this daunting math episode. Many students drop out of majors that they are interested in (Physics, Engineering, Pre-Med, etc.) because of the interminable roadblock – Calculus. This is one person who saw it through amongst several F grades and much turmoil!

calculus study sessionAfter spending hours toiling through Calculus 1 and giving his all Dominic received a D grade. This almost caused him to quit his course of study and switch to a less math-centric major. Dominic had tried his very best yet failed in his pursuit; he was startled, confused and ready to quit. After all, his true love was not physics or engineering but music.

Dominic studying during his 2nd attempt at Calculus 1, spring 2012

As his father I did my best to encourage him by highlighting the lifelong benefits of pursuing something hard now for an easier and prosperous life in the future. A family friend, Burl Don, shared how he had struggled through calculus and eventually graduated Med-school to become a successful MD.

But it was his Calc 1 instructor, Mr. Eitel the instructor he had earned the D grade from, whose words truly hit home. Mr. Eitel was relating a story during class about his two sons, both college graduates who majored in Business.

4 Reasons Being Grateful Works

by Joe Tassinari, Workplace Enrichment Developer, UC Davis Instructor, posted at The Holland Group

When it comes to life the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude.” gratefulGilbert K. Chesterton

One way to generate a high functioning workplace is to express gratitude. When you say something kind, nice or positive about a coworker you are helping their value shine forth through your acknowledgement of that trait.

by Joe Tassinari, WE Coach

Now that we’ve completed a full session of Workplace Enrichment (one workshop and three coached staff meetings) I'm sharing the following observations.

The workshop, held 10/28/13 established comfort and understanding among the participants. By the end of the workshop the executive team of Smart Building, Inc. were openly interacting and sharing views with one another. They arrived to a place of peacefulness and proved to themselves that positive interaction could be achieved.
